Planned Giving: Leave Your Legacy... Make History

Our team at the Foundation is committed to raising private funding for the State Historical Society of North Dakota to fulfill its mission of identifying, preserving, interpreting, and promoting the Heritage of North Dakota and its people. Generous individuals like you can offer immediate support by making a donation or becoming a Foundation member today, but you can also contribute by making a planned gift! Your gift to the Foundation’s endowment provides support for the State Historical Society of North Dakota to continue its mission and activities for generations to come. Not only does it have significant tax benefits, but planned giving is also an opportunity for you to get involved in the future of North Dakota history.

North Dakota Charitable Giving 40% Tax Credit

Through the North Dakota Charitable Giving Tax Credit, annual contributions of $5,000.00 or more to our qualified endowment fund may be eligible for a North Dakota state tax credit of 40% of the gift amount, up to a maximum credit of $10,000.00 per individual or $20,000.00 per couple filing jointly. Any unused credit can be carried forward for an additional three years.

Additional Giving Opportunities

Gifts with Immediate Benefit

  • CASH: A cash gift is the most convenient way to make a gift to the Foundation. Your gift supports our work instantly and you receive a charitable giving tax deduction on this year’s return. In addition to a federal deduction, North Dakota offers a 40% state tax credit for gifts of $5,000.00 or more to qualified North Dakota 501(c)3 endowments, such as the Foundation's endowment fund.
  • SECURITIES: A gift of stocks or bonds may provide you with an even greater tax benefit. If you have owned securities for more than one (1) year and the value has increased, you can avoid capital gains taxes and receive a charitable giving tax deduction equal to the fair market value of your gifts.
  • REAL ESTATE: A gift of real estate that has been held for more than one (1) year provides you with a charitable giving tax deduction based on the current value of the property, while avoiding capital gains tax on the sale of your property.

Gifts that Leave a Legacy

  • CHARITABLE BEQUESTS: A bequest is a gift made through your will or trust, documenting your wishes today without relinquishing assets during your lifetime.

Gifts that Generate Income for You

  • CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST: A charitable remainder trust (CRT) provides both a gift for us and an income for you. CRTs enable you to generate income, avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your appreciated assets, provide you with a charitable income tax deduction while fulfilling your philanthropic objectives. Additionally, North Dakota offers a 40% state tax credit for planned or deferred gifts of $5,000.00 or more.
  • CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY: A charitable gift annuity is similar to a charitable trust, but simpler. You transfer your cash or property to us and we promise to make a fixed payment to you for life at a rate based on your age. In addition to the security of fixed income, you receive a charitable income tax deduction and a portion of each of your annuity payments may be tax free.

Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Rollover

  • If you are 70½ or older, you may also be interested in lower the taxes on your IRA withdrawals. An IRA charitable rollover is a way you can help us continue our work you realize the benefit this year. For more information about the benefits of an IRA rollover, please contact our team.
