Posted 10/14/25 (Tue)

BISMARCK, N.D. — The State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation will host the annual Local History Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, November 5, at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.

The ceremony immediately follows the Foundation’s quarterly Board of Directors meeting and recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations dedicated to preserving and sharing North Dakota’s local history.

“These awards celebrate the people who make sure our stories endure. Their work ensures that future generations understand the communities, values, and creativity that define North Dakota.” - Dale Lennon, State Historical Society of North Dakota Foundation Executive Director

This year’s honorees include:

Person of History – Arlene Saugstad (posthumous)

The late Arlene Saugstad of Minot, North Dakota, is remembered as a remarkable figure whose contributions to the arts and history left a lasting imprint on her community. In 1971, she played a pivotal role in founding the Mouse River Players, a community-based theater group driven by the dedication of local volunteers. Her vision and leadership provided Minot with a creative hub that continues to inspire performers and audiences alike. Arlene’s passion for community storytelling and performance arts helped shape a cultural legacy that lives on today.

Excellence in Local History – Toine Schreinemachers

Hailing from Venlo, Netherlands, Toine Schreinemachers has dedicated himself to uncovering and preserving the history of Venlo, North Dakota—a once-thriving rural community founded by immigrants from his homeland. His research, publications, and community outreach have connected descendants and locals on both sides of the Atlantic, bridging cultures through shared heritage and rekindling awareness of a nearly forgotten settlement.

Excellence in Local History – Fargo Air Museum

Founded in 2001, the Fargo Air Museum preserves aviation history and inspires future generations through its collection of historic aircraft, educational programs, and community engagement. From early aviation pioneers to modern flight innovation, the museum offers hands-on experiences that connect North Dakotans to the state’s proud aviation heritage.

Heritage Profile Honor – Jerry Newborg

Jerry Newborg, former State Archivist at the State Historical Society of North Dakota, led a staff of fifteen in preserving the state’s documentary record. Collaborating with higher education institutions, he developed a cooperative system for acquiring and sharing historical information statewide. His leadership in newspaper microfilming preserved more than 10 million pages of newsprint across 10,000 rolls of film. His crowning achievement came in 2007 with the design and completion of a 34,000-square-foot archives addition at the State Archives. His career exemplifies a lifetime of commitment to safeguarding North Dakota’s historical record.

A committee appointed by the Director of the State Historical Society evaluates nominations for each Local History Award category and determines a winner based on their contributions related to the research, preservation, interpretation, promotion, or expansion of North Dakota historical knowledge. Current and previous recipients are recognized on several plaques, which visitors can find on display in Bismarck. You can learn more about the Local History Awards program, find forms, and submit a nomination for review on the State Historical Society website.
